AFTER 13 YEARS, MAHATHIR TO ATTEND PARLIAMENT AGAIN ON TUESDAY

Filed under: Politics — Hornbill Unleashed @ 9:01 PM

Thirteen years after stepping down as prime minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad will soon be in Parliament again – this time, to attend a meeting organised by opposition MPs.

The meeting follows police investigation against three former cabinet ministers who raised the 1MDB issue in their speeches in the Dewan Rakyat.

Veteran MP Lim Kit Siang of DAP said Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia, cabinet ministers, BN MPs and former MPs are also invited to the meeting to be held next Tuesday.

Former deputy prime minister minister Muhyiddin Yassin and former rural and regional development minister Mohd Shafie Apdal, who are no longer with BN, and former second finance minister Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah have agreed to attend, Lim said.

“We propose to call a meeting among MPs, ex-MPs and ministers in Parliament on Tuesday to discuss a common strategy on our action and response.

“I have spoken to Mahathir. He is supportive and may be able to come.

“Muhyiddin, Shafie and Ahmad Husni will also attend (to discuss) how MPs must respond on this new challenge and we will ask the speaker to come to this meeting to explain what he will be doing to defend Parliament immunity,” Lim added.

Muhyiddin said on Tuesday that police have called him to give a statement on alleged breach of his oath of secrecy, during his Dewan Rakyat speech.

Ahmad Husni is scheduled to have his statements recorded by the police next week.

Opposition leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the investigation against Ahmad Husni is unconstitutional.

Wan Azizah said Article 63(2) of the Federal Constitution states that Members of Parliament can speak on any subject during parliamentary proceedings.

Article 63(4) states that immunity is only suspended for discussions on the national language, special position of the bumiputera and Malay rulers.
