Sarawak 4 Sarawakians (S4S) has called on the people to gather at the Kuching Waterfront and the Sarawak Assembly in support of a comprehensive motion on Borneo rights.
“The motion will end 53 years of the steady erosion of our position,” said S4S spokesman Peter John Jaban in a statement. “The state legislative assembly will be tabling a motion to turn back the clock.”
The motion is seeking to reinstate the rights of Sabah and Sarawak as per the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), said the rights advocate.
S4S is urging the people to support their lawmakers at the state level in witnessing the “historic moment”.
“This is about regaining our status after the 1976 humiliation,” said Jaban. “We were downgraded to a state (in the Malayan Federation) from a founding partner in Malaysia.”
He cautioned against continuing to focus on who made mistakes four decades ago, but to move forward together.
“Sarawak must look to the future,” said Jaban.
“Defending autonomy was originally the responsibility of the people. So, we should not remain indifferent,” he said.
Otherwise, he warned, the people might see another instance of the 1976 “disaster” that so strongly affected them.
The S4S chief believes the motion is the first step of many but a significant one.
“It’s recognition of our position as a founding partner,” he said.
The federation had been one in name only since July 13, 1976, when Article 1(2) was amended, lamented Jaban.
S4S activist Chan Chee Hiong added that a big crowd was expected at the Kuching Waterfront to support the motion.
“The historic gathering would be between 8am and 10am on the opposite side of the river from the Sarawak Assembly building,” said Chan.
“The police have been notified, the management of the Kuching Waterfront is ready.”
