As Bersih5, one of the biggest civil rights rallies looms, Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah received another death threat.
Malaysiakini reported that this time, images sent to her mobile phone showed the decapitation of Maria, her three sons, Bersih secretariat member Mandeep Singh and Human Rights Society chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan.
“The first threat received last month showed pictures of a man dressed in black and wearing a balaclava holding a dagger to the necks of Maria, Mandeep and Ambiga.
“Maria, who filed a police report in Ipoh this afternoon, declined to disclose the latest images due to their horrific nature.
“I have not shown the images to my sons. It’s horrific for anyone to be so low as to attack us so personally,” she told Malaysiakini.
“(The message was) sent at 12.49am but I only saw it at 4.30am. There was no message this time – just images,” she added.
“Last month’s threat had a message stating that it was a warning from “Malaysian Islamic State operatives”.
“In a tweet earlier, Maria said the death threat would not intimidate her and Bersih 5 would proceed as planned.
“Our right to assemble is enshrined in Article 10 of the Federal Constitution and that’s what we will continue to fight for,” she told Malaysiakini later.
While no one has been hauled up or charged for the first threat against Maria and her sons, it seems that whoever issued the second threat this time – be it the same person, Malaysian Islamic State or not – has decided that he or she will not be caught or the authorities would not be bothered.
As Maria has filed police reports along with the others who were threatened, it will be very unbecoming of the police and the authorities involved not to take such threats seriously.
Even if the police is not on the side of Maria for organising Bersih5, the police have the duty to investigate the report, arrest and charge the person or persons who had issued these threats.
To not take these threats seriously and state that the ones who are making the threat may only be shooting off their mouths will only prove that the authorities are indeed taking sides, when the utmost duty of the police is to ensure every one of the rakyat – even a critic of the government – is protected from harm and crime.
(When Red Shirt Movement leader Datuk Jamal Yunos threatened to tear down a portal’s building, the Inspector General of Police had stated that,“You know him (Jamal) right? Everyone knows him. He has threatened a few things in the past, but nothing came true.”)
Even a small child will ask, if the police cannot take care of Maria, how can they take care of the rest of us? Let there be no regrets.
