Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) Mayor Datuk Abang Wahab Abang Julai at the site of the amphitheatre under renovation, says the Bersih 5 organisers would have to look an alternative venue to hold their peaceful assembly on Nov 19. ― Picture by Sulok TawieKuching North City Hall (DBKU) Mayor Datuk Abang Wahab Abang Julai said today Bersih 5 would not be able to use the amphitheatre at Jalan Budaya for its November 19 rally in the state due to unsafe conditions.

“You are the witnesses to this. It is under extensive renovation,” Abang Wahab told reporters when met at the venue this afternoon.

He said bricks, broken tiles and other materials are lying about at the amphitheatre as the place is currently undergoing renovation works.

“The renovation work started some weeks ago, long before we received an application from the organisers to use the amphitheatre for their assembly.

“It is not that we do not want to let them use it, but because it is for their own safety,” he said, adding that DBKU would have to protect itself against any legal suits should anything happen to any of the participants.

He said the renovation work is expected to be completed either in January or February next year.

“It should be ready for public use by March or April,” he added.

Abang Wahab said the organisers would have to go to the Indoor Stadium to hold their assembly, the venue approved by DBKU, or any other venue.

When contacted by Malay Mail Online, Sarawak Bersih 5 chairman Ann Teo said the organising committee would see what steps they would take next.
