Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail waves to rally-goers during Bersih 4 in Kuala Lumpur August 29, 2015. — Picture by Saw Siow Feng Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail denounced the government’s “clamp down” on pro-Bersih supporters on the eve of its street demonstration in the city tomorrow.

She noted the government dragnet started with the prosecution of Malaysiakinieditor-in-chief Steven Gan this morning, and continued with the arrests of Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah, the electoral watchdog’s secretary Mandeep Singh, her fellow Opposition lawmaker Anthony Loke and others.

“I fully condemn this series of hard actions.

“At the same time, if anyone thinks these arrests and clamp down will break our fighting spirit and frighten the people from participating in the Bersih 5 peaceful assembly, it will only increase the people’s anger,” she said in a statement.

In a separate statement, Amnesty International too condemned the government for what it called crude and heavy-handed attempts to cow human rights defenders.

The global human rights watchdog noted today’s arrests included Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria and her fellow steering committee member, secretary Mandeep, noting they had been campaigning for electoral reform and were against corruption.

“These arrests are the latest in a series of crude and heavy-handed attempts to intimidate Malaysian civil society activists and other human rights defenders.

“They must be released immediately and unconditionally, and tomorrow’s rally must be allowed to go ahead peacefully,” Josef Benedict, Amnesty International’s deputy director for South-east Asia and the Pacific region, said in a statement.

He described all the activists taken in by the police today as “prisoners of conscience”.

“They must be allowed to exercise their rights to freedom of expression, assembly and association peacefully without any interference, threats or harassment from officials or non-state actors seeking to provoke unrest,” he added.

  1. 40,000 crowd of Bersih 5 is a great success. If not for the intimidation bloodbath by red shirts and threats and bluffs by the authorities, the turnout today can be more than thrice the number. What is important is the clarion call for clean election, clean government and institutional reforms. Down with kleptocracy. Bersih 5 is one of the many steps forward. Bersih, Bersih, Bersih.

  2. Marcos, his wife and their cronies plundered up to US$10 billion from state coffers and plunged the Philippines into crippling debt during his rule, according to government investigators and historians. We can certainly compare this to what MO1, his wife and cronies are doing in Malaysia. As a result of massive corruption and abuse of power, Malaysia’s debt is now at 100% of GDP, as recently reported by Moody’s Investment Services. This is at an all time high! As we speak, the Ringgit’s value is continuing its plunge, expected to reach RM5 to the US$ in six months’ time. There is a crisis of confidence among international investors in Malaysia because of the grossly corrupt and incompetent UMNO government led by MO1. If we do not do anything and allow the status quo to continue, Malaysia will be the next Zimbabwe. Can Malaysians accept this? The answer is clearly NO! We as the rakyat, have the duty to transform Malaysia for the better, for the sake of future generations.

  3. In fact it is not the Bersih which is causing the problem. It is the red shirts which is causing the problem. They choose red to show it is to do with blood. He reminds of May 13 and shows many other ways to threaten. He calls DAP racist who uses Bersih to achieve their aim, whereas, every race participate in Bersih rally. Why do they have to stop someone from rallying? They have their own rally some other time to show he can gather 300,000 members to counter Bersih. That is good enough to defeat Bersih. This will also reveal the truth of the true feelings of the rakyat.
