The lion’s share of Penang’s 2017 budget for the Chief Minister’s Office and the State Secretary’s Office, which received a total of RM707.61 million, as compared to the RM161.59 million in 2016, saw a shocking increment of 4.4 times and is equal to half of the budget. This means the people in the state will have to bear the brunt of his office’s expenses, which will more likely benefit his cronies!
In the past, there were only 15 staff members in the former Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon’s office. Why does Lim Guan Eng need to employ more than 41 staff today, which is a fourfold increment as compared to the previous government? Regardless of the staff being employed on permanent or contract basis, taxpayers will have to bear the cost of their salaries.
Absolute power leads to absolute corruption. Why did the Penang budget allocate so much funds for the chief minister office? Penangites are concerned about it. Penang government has neglected the urgency of fixing the problem of recurring floods in Penang, while the Chief Minister’s Office and State Secretary’s Office continued to receive 4.4 times more in allocations. Not to mention the sale of government land to polish their fiscal surplus. Why the same amount was not used to save the Penang flood victims?
Flood mitigation aside, Penang’s manufacturing sector is also facing a crisis now. Instead of dedicating huge allocation to the Chief Minister’s Office, it is better to spend it on resuscitating industrial development in Penang to prevent multinational companies from shifting their operations to other business-friendly places.
Besides, the deficit projected for the 2017 state budget is RM667 million, which is a 2.3-fold increase from last year’s RM292.13 million. Expenditure has also gone up 5 times more from RM280 million during BN’s administration to the current RM1.35 billion.
When the federal government announced bonus payment in appreciation of the civil servants’ contributions in the Budget 2017, Pakatan Harapan was deeply upset. Why did the Pakatan Harapan not criticise Lim Guan Eng’s overcrowded office and double-deficit problem now?
Lim Guan Eng’s words are not matched by deeds. He has renounced public opinion. He criticised the federal government, but the DAP-led Penang government is bloated and wasteful. Pakatan Harapan just remains silent on all these issues. This simply shows the Pakatan Harapan is practising double standards!
