Members of the Red Shirts movement are seen at Jalan Raja Laut in Kuala Lumpur November 19, 2016. detained Umno Youth leader Datuk Armand Azha Abu Hanifah and a Bersih 5 demonstrator Howard Lee Chuan How for rioting in the city centre today.

Armand was picked up by the police at Padang Merbok after his speech in support of the Red Shirts movement while Lee was detained at NU Sentral in Brickfields, Malay daily Berita Harian reported on its website.

Both men are being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting and Section 511 of the same Act, a generic provision that covers attempts to commit offences punishable with imprisonment.

Both have since been taken to the Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters, the news portal added.

Armand, 41, had earlier told a news conference at Padang Merbok that public misconceptions about the Red Shirts movement were caused by the Red Bean Army that he linked to the Opposition DAP that has been repeatedly debunked as non-existent.

He also asserted that the Red Shirts is not racist nor radical but a movement that aims to unite all Malaysians regardless of their colour and creed, pointing to a handful of ethnic Indian supporters among the mostly Malay participants in its counter rally against the yellow-shorted Bersih 5 demonstrators that thronged the city’s streets today.
