A writ of habeas corpus will be filed to free Bersih chairman Maria Chin Abdullah, who has been detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act, or Sosma.
Critics of the government have said the use of Sosma was unwarranted and that the law was meant for use against terrorism.
Speaking to a large crowd at the final Bersih 5 gathering outside the Kuala Lumpur City Centre shopping complex yesterday evening, she said a writ of habeas corpus would be filed. “We will do all in our power to make sure she will be out soon,” she was quoted as saying.
Maria and Bersih secretariat member Mandeep Singh were arrested on Friday at the Bersih office in Petaling Jaya. Police and Companies Commission officers seized computers, mobile phones as well as documents related to Bersih’s bank accounts and payroll, it was reported.
Bersih is being investigated under the Penal Code provisions on “activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy” after media reports on leaked US documents said Bersih, a coalition for electoral reforms, had received funds from the Open Society Foundations linked to billionaire George Soros.
