Disabled activist Isaiah Jacob has vowed to go on a hunger strike until Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah is released.
“Although I may be less than perfect physically, I’m stronger than others mentally.
“I will also spend the night here in Dataran Merdeka starting Friday until Maria is released,” he said in his speech.
Speaking to FMT, he said he was doing all this for “Maria and country”.
“I will not eat or drink anything except a bit of water when my throat and lips are too dry.
“I am also not afraid of being harassed by authorities when I sleep here starting Friday.”
Scores of people are taking part in the vigil at Dataran Merdeka demanding Maria’s release.
It began last night after Maria was arrested under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) on Nov 18, a day before the Bersih 5 rally in Kuala Lumpur.
The event, which at first was held at a water fountain in front of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), moved to the streets after orders from DBKL.
A big screen at the Dataran displayed orders by the mayor who said the area would be closed from Nov 22 to 29, starting 5am until 7am, though no reason was given.
DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang, who was also present, said he was happy to see so many people attending the second night of the vigil.
“We want the Inspector-General of Police (Khalid Abu Bakar) and the prime minister to listen. If not, then we will be here every night.
“This second day, there are even more people here. Are you all supporting a terrorist?” he asked.
His question was met with a resounding “no” from several hundred people present.
He was referring to Maria’s arrest under Sosma, an act that was gazetted in June 2012 to address terrorist activities.
Deputy Home Minsiter Nur Jazlan, when asked by reporters today, said Maria was not being arrested for terrorism but after police reports were made against her.
“She is being investigated under the Criminal Procedure Code, which is under Sosma, to allow police to investigate her,” he said before telling reporters to refer to the IGP for further information.
