Hundreds gathered at the launch of the ‘Free Maria Campaign’ here at the Petaling Jaya Community Library hall to demand the immediate release of the Bersih 2.0 chairman.
Maria is currently detained for 28 days under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) for activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy.
The crowd here today also labelled Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar as a “liar” for claiming that Maria did not request a mattress when in solitary confinement.
At about 9.30pm, the number of attendees increased to about 1,000 people.
Selangor DAP chairman and Petaling Jaya Utara (PJU) MP Tony Pua, PKR president and Permatang Pauh MP Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Kota Raja MP Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud were some of the speakers at the event, along with several other activists.
Maria’s three sons; Aziman Maria Mohd Yunus, 22, Azumin Mohd Yunus,23 and Azemi Maria Mohd Yunus also gave a speech, reminiscing their mother’s funny quirks, expressing how they yearn to see her again.
The event ended around 11.20pm with the recital of an Islamic prayer for Maria, other activists and the people at large.
Maria, 60, was detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Act 747) Sosma on the eve of the Bersih 5.0 rally, held in the federal capital last Saturday.
On November 22, she filed a habeas corpus application at the High Court, seeking her immediate release from the detention. The court has set November 29 to hear the application.
