‘Changes to Marriage & Divorce Act well received by Muslim MPs’

Kulasegaran_Takiyuddin-Hassan_600DAP’s M Kulasegaran is standing up to PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan, who has threatened to derail the bill to amend the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976.

Takiyuddin was reported to have said this was in retaliation for non-Muslim interference in PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s motion to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Act 355)

“I am astounded Takiyuddin still does not understand that Parliament is not the place for his archaic barter system.

“Every MP elected should represent and serve all constituents, regardless of race, religion, gender, etc.

“Nazri Aziz, a Muslim MP, has stated that Kelantan needs stricter shariah laws, thus the amendments, because the state has failed to eradicate crime after all this time. Does Takiyuddin agree?”

Takiyuddin, who is Kota Bharu MP, issued a press statement today warning non-Muslim MPs against interfering with Hadi’s Bill to amend Act 355.

Takiyuddin said should they persist, the Muslim MPs would in return object to the bill to amend the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976.

“The amendments to the Law Reform (Marriage & Divorce) Act 1976 are actually well received by the Muslim MPs.

“They believe it will guarantee that converts genuinely embrace Islam, instead of using the religion as an excuse to evade their responsibilities.

“(With his threat) Takiyuddin has inadvertently stated that he would vote against having genuine Muslim converts as long as stiffer shariah punishments are allowed.”

Kulasegaran said the bill to amend the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976 had come so far because of DAP’s tireless work.

“When I raised the issue in Parliament in 2009, there was no support at all from component BN parties, who today still dilly-dally in stating their position instead of giving a firm and final decision.

“There have been many cases (of unilateral conversion), one of them being the children of Indira Gandhi, who has been battling for custody of her youngest who was taken away by her husband seven years ago.

“PAS has probably realised that without collaboration with Pakatan Harapan, the party has to work with Umno,

“A private member’s bill rarely sees the light of day. What has been promised to and by Hadi for this Bill to even be tabled? And since when is Takiyuddin the appointed spokesman for Muslim MPs?

“It (PAS’ threat) appears to be a desperate case of ‘shiok sendiri’.

“We will not compromise as our stand on the matter is very clear. We will not be cowed by Takiyuddin’s theatrics. Our duty and responsibility are to the Malaysian people.”
