The Gabungan Pelajar Melayu Semenanjung’s (GPMS) call to urge our Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak to not give recognition to the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) indicates a self-proclaimed conservative mindset. Instead, recognition of the UEC will reflect the spirit of treating the languages of all ethnic groups’ evenly.
In fact GPMS should adopt an open attitude or else it will be eliminated by the education community, not to mention that the Teachers’ Training Colleges have accepted applications by UEC holders from Chinese Independent High School, and now only local public universities have yet to recognise the UEC. So far, UEC recognition has not encountered any problems in getting recognition by private universities or Teachers’ Training Colleges nationwide.
Many countries also recognise UEC holders and even offer them scholarships. In addition, the UEC curriculum fulfils international standards and is recognised by many foreign renowned universities. Therefore GPSM’s rhetoric is unfounded without valid ground.
As Malaysians, we all live up to our spirit of patriotism, and only those who are out to disrupt national harmony will allege the UEC holders as lacking patriotism.
No matter what, MCA is consistent in our fight in getting the government to recognise the UEC and we will continue with our efforts in pushing it through.
For the government to recognise the UEC, it will be big leap forward for the Malaysian education system, where UEC holders can contribute towards the civil service, which is also a way of showing their patriotism. On the contrary, GPMS remains a stumbling block against national harmony.
