Zaid fails in bid to refer his case to High Court

Filed under: Politics — Hornbill Unleashed @ 8:02 AM

Zaid-Ibrahim_law_60012Former de facto law minister Zaid Ibrahim failed to transfer his case to the High Court to determine the constitutionality of a criminal charge.

Sessions Court judge Zaman Mohd Noor dismissed Zaid’s application to challenge the validity of section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA).

The court fixed Feb 21, 2017 for the trial to resume.

Zaid said he will appeal against the dismissal.

“The judge ruled in chambers on Tuesday that he does not have the power to determine my application,” said Zaid in updating the media.

Deputy public prosecutor Shukor Abu Bakar confirmed the court’s decision.

Last year, Zaid claimed trial over his blog post, “Rally Behind Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad”. It reportedly called for Prime Minister Najib Razak’s removal.

He was said to have used the blog post with the “intention to upset others”.
