State Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leaders laud the police for capturing Datuk Stephen Lee Chee Kiang the alleged mastermind behind the murder of former PKR Miri branch secretary Bill Kayong,.
State PKR chairman Baru Bian said he and his party members were pleasantly surprised to learn that the main suspect in the shooting of Bill Kayong had been caught and would be sent back to Miri to face charges.
“We congratulate the State Police Commissioner Datuk Mazlan Mansor and State CID Chief Datuk Dev Kumar for the successful liaison and cooperation with the Chinese authorities to bring about this capture.
“We also wish to express our gratitude to the Ministry of Public Security in Putian, Fujian Province for tracing Stephen Lee, apprehending him and handing him to the Malaysian authorities,” Baru, who is Ba Kelalan assemblyman, said in a press statement yesterday.
Lee was arrested on Tuesday night at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) following his deportation from China. He was detained at 7.45pm upon his arrival at KLIA following his arrest in China a day earlier.
Lee was caught by the Ministry of Public Security in Putian Fujian Province on Dec 12 and was subsequently handed over to the Malaysia authorities. He arrived in Miri Airport at about 11.15am yesterday from KLIA and was then brought to the Magistrate’s Court to be charged with abetment in the murder.
Baru said Bill would have turned 43 last week on Dec 8 Dec if he were alive, adding that his family was still grieving for him.
“We in PKR miss his presence and involvement in our party activities. The native villagers feel the loss of their defender acutely. Nothing will bring Bill back but we hope that his family and friends will take a little comfort in the fact that all the suspects including the alleged mastermind will be brought to court to face the charges against them.”
Baru hoped that the police investigators and prosecutors would carry out the due process of law in good time and that there would be no attempt by any parties to interfere with the process or to influence the outcome in any way.
In the meantime, Baru said PKR would continue to champion Native Customary Rights (NCR) land rights and to carry on where Bill left off.
“He believed that a solution needed to be found so that no other lives would be lost in the fight for the NCR of the people to be recognised.”
