PKR Baram chief Roland Engan will not be contesting the Baram seat in the next general election.
Its secretary Dennis Along said Roland would be pursuing his Master’s degree in Law and therefore would not be contesting in the election, which is expected to be held next year.
He is, however, contemplating to contest a state seat in the next state election.
“A new person from the party will contest the Baram seat in the 14GE,” Dennis said when contacted yesterday.
According to Dennis, there were a few graduates from the Orang Ulu community who could be shortlisted to stand
in the Baram seat when the time came, adding that the grassroots PKR supporters understood Roland’s desire to pursue his further studies but they would continue to fight under the PKR banner.
He disclosed that Roland would contest either the Telang Usan or Mulu seat in the next state election.
In the last general election, the Baram seat saw a three-cornered fight between BN (SPDP) candidate Anyi Ngau, PKR candidate Roland Engan and an independent candidate Patrick Sibat Sujang.
Anyi secured 9,182 votes against Roland’s 8,988 votes while Patrick secured 363 votes.
