Umno’s Kuala Selangor MP Datuk Seri Irmohizam Ibrahim today urged Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to apologise to Haj pilgrims sponsored by 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) for alleging that pilgrimage made using 1MDB money will not be “accepted” (tidak mabrur) by God.
In a statement, Irmohizam said that the former prime minister had no say over the status of someone’s pilgrimage.
“This will definitely offend those who have been sponsored under the programme and there will be those who will be angry,” he said.
He said that the sponsorship programme is good because it offers an opportunity for those who are unable to afford to complete their pilgrimage.
He also said that many of his own constituents in Kuala Selangor were offended by the allegation.
“The allegation is as though every good deed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak will not be accepted by Allah,” he said.
He warned that Dr Mahathir’s good deeds in the past should be forgotten because the latter is “too extreme” in disputing any good deeds by the Barisan Nasional government.
Dr Mahathir last year formed Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) along with other former Umno leaders, as an opposition party.
Since 2011, Yayasan 1MDB, a foundation under the state investment arm, had sponsored mosque committee members to perform the Haj.
The number has increased from 111 pilgrims in 2011 to 1,200 pilgrims in 2015
