The petroleum found in Sarawak belongs to Sarawakians and as such, the state deserves a separate tier or system of oil pricing from Peninsular Malaysia.
In this regard, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Youth Central publicity secretary Milton Foo said that the oil prices for Sarawak should be at least 20 per cent lower than those in Peninsular Malaysia or the world market price, in view of Sarawak having contributed so much in terms of petroleum resources in Malaysia, amounting to 47 per cent.
His remarks were made in response to the recent nationwide fuel price hikes, where the retail prices of RON95 and RON97 petrol went up by 20 sen to RM2.30 per litre and RM2.60 per litre, respectively; while diesel price increased by 10 sen to RM2.15 per litre.
According to Foo, the Petroleum Development Act 1974 which had taken away the Sarawakians’ rights over petroleum found in their territories including those offshore the state, as ‘unconstitutional, null and void’ in that it did not follow a substantive provision of the Federal Constitution.
“This is, therefore, unfair to the people of Sarawak where oil resources have been taken away from us by the federal government through the device of the said unconstitutional Act of Parliament.
“I appeal to the Sarawak government to take a proactive role in setting up our very own petroleum company to take full charge of our own petroleum resources for the best interest and benefit of the people of Sarawak in the long run,” he said in a statement issued to the press yesterday.
Foo said the proposed two tiers of oil pricing for Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak should only be used as the ‘temporary mechanism’ to ensure that Sarawakians would be treated more fairly in view of the state’s contribution to oil production in Malaysia.
Moreover, he believed that each and every Sarawakian deserved the right to know on how the five per cent oil and gas royalty had been calculated all these years by the federal government and also by Petronas.
“In this matter, all Sarawakians must stand up and remain united under one collective voice, regardless of political backgrounds. We should no longer condone the wrongful act of federal government to further snatch our wealth. Return to us what’s ours is ours as safeguarded under MA63 & the Federal Constitution,” stressed Foo.
