In a letter written before police made their first arrest in the case yesterday, the group that represents 348 churches in 110 countries claimed that Koh’s abduction has fuelled “fear and mistrust” among Malaysia’s religious minorities.

“I therefore respectfully ask you to order an intensification of the investigation into the abduction of Pastor Koh to ascertain his whereabouts, and ensure his immediate release and return to his family,” Reverend Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, the general secretary of the group, wrote on March 8.

“Please give this appeal your personal urgent consideration,” he concluded in the letter addressed to Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Selangor police chief Datuk Seri Abdul Samah Mat yesterday announced the arrest of a 32-year-old man who contacted Koh’s family to demand a ransom.

The suspect is currently under remand to aid police investigations against him for kidnapping and extortion.

Koh, 62, was abducted on February 13. A video of what is believed to be his abduction has since spread online.

The video depicts a coordinated attack on Koh involving multiple abductors using several cars and motorcycles.

The video as well as the absence of a ransom demand prior to this have fuelled rumours over the motives for his abduction.
