State Assistant Minister for Local Goverment Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil said the proposal raised by Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof last week would benefit motorists as a whole and Marudi in the long run in terms of economic potientals.

“Travelling time between Miri and Limbang using Marudi road may be longer but motorists need not worry about the hassle of passport checks like they have to do now,” Penguang, who is Marudi assemblyman, told reporters here today.

Earlier he chaired a meeting with Public Works Department (PWD) officers and head of communities from Marudi on the progress of upgrading works of the 43.2-km Miri-Marudi road scheduled for completion by 2019.

Last Saturday, Fadillah said that the federal government was considering having the Sarawak portion of the Pan Borneo Highway skip Brunei to avoid the hassle of numerous passport checks for motorists.

He was quoted as saying that Miri and Limbang roads could be connected through Marudi to prevent motorists from immigration hassle at the borders.

Fadillah had said he would raise the matter with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak soon.

At the moment Malaysians in Sabah and Sarawak as well as Brunei citizens had to pass through eight Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) checkpoints if they drove one way from Sarawak through Brunei to Sabah.

By commuting to and fro, motorist would have his or her passport stamped 16 times.

On the progress of the upgrading works of Miri-Marudi road, Penguang said, it was ahead of schedule despite the current rainy season and was expected to be tar sealed by August 2017.
