Quit politics if you’re not interested in elections, DAP MP tells PAS

In a statement this morning, the Bukit Bendera MP claimed that the current PAS leadership’s political approach differed greatly from its formers leaders, and that the Islamist party was now content in playing second fiddle to Umno.

“When PAS speaks about obtaining God’s blessing and the consequences of the afterlife being better and the rejection of winning the general election as a strategic consideration, why does not PAS simply just leave the struggle of winning elections and join a Tabligh congregation?

“A political party has to set a goal of having an impact on national policies. While we do not reject the need for personal change and societal development, but for political parties the path is through changing national policies to a more just, caring system for all,” he said in a statement.

“If PAS no longer has this vision, what is the use of calling themselves political parties?” Zairil added.

He said that PAS spiritual advisor Hashim Jasin’s recent remarks stating that winning elections is not a priority for the Islamist party was proof that it has changed from the time it fought alongside opposition parties in Pakatan Rakyat and Barisan Alternatif.

The DAP leader added that Hashim had also claimed that PAS would not work together with any party which upheld liberal and secular values, and that this was in stark contrast to the Islamist party’s willingness to ally themselves with DAP in the past.

“This statement has caused many questions and confusion because if PAS finds DAP with its secular and democratic principles so repulsive, how then can PAS ally themselves with DAP, not just for a while but for ten years under two different coalitions? How did Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat defend and praise DAP all this while?” Zairil asked.

After falling out with DAP, PAS quit Pakatan Rakyat last year and is mooting to form a third opposition bloc with other allies in order to contest in elections.

This also led to the formation of PAS splinter party, Amanah and its formation of Pakatan Harapan together with DAP and PKR.
