Lawyer Mohd Amir Sharil Bahari Md Noor had in his motion noted the diverse backgrounds of Malaysian Bar members who are multi-ethnic and of different religions, before going on to say that “all major religions” allegedly prohibit the consumption of alcohol. — AFP picA lawyer has proposed a motion to stop the serving of alcohol at all events of the Malaysian Bar, which is the professional body for all legal practitioners in Peninsular Malaysia.

Lawyer Mohd Amir Sharil Bahari Md Noor had in his motion noted the diverse backgrounds of Malaysian Bar members who are multi-ethnic and of different religions, before going on to say that “all major religions” allegedly prohibit the consumption of alcohol.

He then claimed that the serving of alcohol in an event would unnecessarily boost the cost by up to 40 per cent, before pointing out the negative effects of drinking too much alcohol.

“Whereas excessive consumption of alcohol would harm a person bodily, medically and could lead to addiction in the long run.

“Whereas the intention of serving alcohol on Malaysian Bar functions remains questionable,” the lawyer better known as Amir Bahari wrote in his proposed motion for the Malaysian Bar’s 71st annual general meeting (AGM) this Saturday.

“Whereas the application of Jurisprudence principle of Harm Must Be Eliminated should be upheld at all times.

“Accordingly, the Malaysian Bar hereby resolves that all Malaysian Bar functions shall not serve alcohol to all guests,” he concluded in his motion dated March 10 and sighted by Malay Mail Online.

In his campaign last month for the Kuala Lumpur Bar chairman post, Amir Bahari had among other things promised to “Islamise” the Kuala Lumpur Bar by discontinuing the serving of alcohol at its events.

In the contest between Amir Bahari and two other lawyers at the KL Bar’s 25th AGM last month, members ultimately voted for lawyer Goh Siu Lin to be their next chairman.

Following the 25th AGM on February 23, Amir Bahari had lodged a complaint with the Malaysian Bar over fellow lawyer Siti Zabedah Kasim over a video clip uploaded on her Facebook page.

For this Saturday’s Malaysian Bar AGM, Amir Bahari is also proposing a motion to call on the Malaysian Bar to resolve to condemn her behaviour in uploading the February 23 video allegedly showing the 25th KL Bar AGM’s proceedings.

He also in his March 10 motion called on the Malaysian Bar to resolve to call on the incoming Bar Council members to immediately lodge a complaint against Siti with the disciplinary board, as well as to urge the Bar Council to take all other steps to prevent her from allegedly continuing to bring the legal profession into disrepute.

A check by Malay Mail Online found that Siti had on February 25 announced on her Facebook page the removal of the video.

A total of six motions have been proposed by a total of five lawyers, including Bar Council chairman Steven Thiru’s two proposed motions touching on the Kelantan Orang Asli community and deaths in police custody and police brutality.

Lawyers Charles Hector Fernandez, Francis Pereira and Shanmugam Ramasamy have jointly proposed two motions for the Malaysian Bar to consider, which covered the call for prosecution of police officers involved in torture and deaths in custody, as well as the call for the repeal of the Prevention of Crime Act and all laws allowing detention without trial.
