Six female immigration officers in Sarawak were rounded up by graftbusters after they allowed undocumented foreigners to enter and work in the state.
The women were arrested along with four male immigration officers during an afternoon swoop by the Malaysian-Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) yesterday.
The suspects, aged between 33 and 53, were picked up at the Sarawak Immigration Headquarters, Kuching International Airport, Pending Department Immigration Office and Semuja Deportation depot centre in Serian.
It was learnt they received bribes of between RM200 and RM5,000 in exchange for “protecting” foreigners who did not have valid travel documents or work permits.
Anti-graft officers seized RM10,000 from one of the suspects.
MACC director of investigations Datuk Simi Abd Ghani confirmed the arrests and did not rule out the possibility that there were more officers involved.
“The smuggling of illegal foreign workers not only threatens public order and national security, but also contributes to the increase in crime,” he said.
