Tony Pua said the system was still being studied, despite it and the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry previously announcing that weekly price setting would begin next month. — Picture by Saw Siow FengTony Pua today urged the government not to go back on a proposal to set ceiling prices for fuel weekly beginning April, following conflicting information on the topic.

He noted that a written Parliamentary response from the Finance Ministry this week said the system was still being “studied”, despite it and the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry previously announcing that weekly price setting would begin next month.

“Why did both of the ministries make public announcements on the implementation of the policy commencing on April 1?” Pua asked during a press conference at Parliament today.

“Did the government make a quiet U-turn on the policy without informing the public?” he asked.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin today reiterated that the weekly price mechanism will be implemented on April 1.

“The Cabinet has approved it and we will start next week,” he said.

Prices for RON95 and RON97 petrol as well as diesel are currently determined using a monthly float system.
