Najib says BN won’t push Shariah Bill

Barisan Nasional will not table amendments to increase Shariah punishments being sought by PAS, said Datuk Seri Najib Razak. — Bernama file picBarisan Nasional will not table amendments to increase Shariah punishments being sought by PAS, Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today.

The prime minister and BN chairman said this was decided by the coalition following its supreme council meeting this evening.

“Therefore it will remain a Private Member’s Bill and if it is presented, it will depend on the Speakers instructions,” he was quoted as saying by the Star Online news portal.

BN previously said it would take over PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s proposal and convert it into a government Bill eventually.

Tonight’s announcement will remove the obligation that would have existed for BN federal lawmakers to support the amendments were these tabled by the government.

Hadi’s Bill may now fail to even surface in Parliament; he was only able to table the motion for his Bill last year after an Umno minister intervened to elevate it above government matters.

Aside from Umno, the Bill to raise Shariah sentencing limits to 30 years’ jail, RM100,000 fine and 100 strokes of the cane has been opposed by BN components.

Umno has used the issue to court federal opposition party PAS ostensibly for Malay-Muslim unity.

Najib’s announcement could also prompt changes to the political landscape in which PAS had been drifting away from other opposition parties and aligning itself with Umno, the only party to openly support the former’s ambitions on Islamic laws.

  1. Obviously Najib’s unilateral decision to take over Hadi’s private bill as Putrajaya’s had upset all BN components including many Umno Baru lawmakers from Sabah. Realising his mistake and facing an imminent revolt from within Umno Baru led by Zahid Hamidi, Najib cleverly passed the buck to Zahid Hamidi to convince BN components knowing that by making a U turn Zahid would look bad and be blamed for all the unnecessary anxiety created .

  2. Zahid Hamidi has been keeping mum over Najib’s surprised announcement that the BN government would not take the lead to table Act 355 proposed by Hadi Awang of PAS. The decision means the bill shall remain as Hadi’s private bill.

  3. The question is who looks stupid and arrogant after Najib made an expected u turn on Act 355. Firstly Najib made Hadi Awang and PAS all excited by announcing that Act 355 would be taken over by Putrajaya and he made Zahid Hamidi to forcefully promote it to BN components. With the withdrawal by the government Hadi Awang and PAS now look like idiots and Zahid Hamidi is now an untrustworthy and arrogant leader in the eyes of BN components. The whole episode was a political game by Najib to weaken support for Zahid Hamidi and gangs.
