Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) Sarawak will respect the Barisan Nasional’s (BN) decision not to table a bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, or Act355.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced the decision on Tuesday and added that the initial bill tabled by PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang in May would remain a Private Member’s Bill.
PAS Sarawak commissioner Jofri Jaraiee said PAS members of parliament led by Hadi had discharged their duties in accordance with Islam.
“Even if the proposal (amendment bill) is rejected, PAS has already done all it can. It is up to the powers that be to move or reject it,” he said in a statement.
“When the powers that be do not want to execute Almighty God’s command, they would be responsible for any consequences and it is no longer PAS’ responsibility.”
Nevertheless, he hoped Parliament would still debate the bill to clarify all issues surrounding it.
