S4S to hold forum on Sarawak land rights on April 23

Filed under: Politics — Hornbill Unleashed @ 8:02 AM

jonjaban-sfsPro-autonomy advocacy coalition Sarawak For Sarawakians (S4S) will be organising a “Sarawak Rights and Referendum Ordinance” forum on April 23.

The forum will be jointly organised by S4S and the Kuching Traditional Handicraft Studies Society (KTHSS).

It will be held from 10am to 4pm at the Kenyalang Theatre Hall here.

It will focus on four topics: the referendum ordinance, finance (including oil and gas royalties), land rights and education.

Speakers will include Sabahan rights activist Zainnal Ajamain, who will speak on oil and gas financing, corporate lawyer Elsiy Tinggang (education) and lawyer David Teng (Malaysia Agreement 1963).

Sarawak Dayak Iban Association (Sadia) representative Peter John Jaban said native customary rights (NCR) would be discussed at the forum.

“The people should know about their rights and the limits of the powers of the authorities.

“This is important to prevent the frequent land disputes and conflicts between the indigenous people and the authorities.”

He added that forum attendees can also discuss details, operations and laws related to oil royalty entitlement. Sarawak’s lawmakers have sought to raise the oil royalty from its current 5% to 20%.

Meanwhile, S4S southern activity chief Chan Chee Hiong said another topic of interest is the referendum ordinance.

“Under the charter of the United Nations, the referendum ordinance is one of the key fundamental human rights. Therefore, we would like to invite the public to come, discuss and understand how the referendum ordinance works,” Chan said.

Tickets will be sold at RM10 each. S4S said some of the proceeds would be donated to the Social Welfare Association.

Tickets can be obtained from a counter at Premier 101 from 7.30pm to 9.30pm until April 22.
