Not racial to help Malays defend city land parcels, Sarawak CM says

Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg says his administration will not ignore Malay land rights although it grants Native Customary Right (NCR) land to Orang Asal across the state. ― Bernama picSarawak Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg denied he was being racially prejudiced by helping the state’s Malay community keep its land in urban areas, after several plots were allegedly bought by other ethnic groups.

He said his administration will not ignore Malay land rights although it grants Native Customary Right (NCR) land to Orang Asal across the state, The Borneo Post reported today.

“I am not being racial ― I just want to be fair to all races. We have been issuing NCR land titles to the natives,” he was reported saying.

“While the other Bumiputera communities like the Ibans, the Bidayuh have their NCR land, the Malay community only has those land in urban and suburban areas so we must also defend the land rights of the Malays especially the land across this city.

Abang Johari made the remark during the foundation-laying ceremony for the Hikmah Exchange project, which was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and the late Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

The project is owned by the Sarawak Bumiputera Property Foundation, which he said was tasked with defending the interest of Muslims in the state.

Abang Johari also said that the Hikmah Exchange project is Sarawak’s way to defend the property rights of local Muslims, and the offices of federal agencies will be moved there upon its completion.

“The Hikmah Exchange will be wholly-owned by the Malays. When we secure an anchor tenant later, we will have fixed revenues. After that, we will set up a real estate investment trust to generate more revenues for the Malays,” he was quoted saying.
