‘Rohani should resign for failure to speak for child rape victims’

PKR Women national vice-president Voon Shiak Ni has urged Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim to step down as Minister of Women, Family and Community Development for failing in her duty to speak for the victims of child rape.

Voon, who is PKR Stampin branch vice-chairwoman, said it was uncalled for and disappointing for a minister, whose portfolio is to defend the rights and welfare of women and children to defend Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Shabudin Yahaya for saying it was okay for rapists to marry their child victims, instead of demanding he apologise.

“We demand a public apology from Shabudin. We are also disgusted that Rohani did not support the demand for an apology, and yet went on to defend Shabudin’s statement. We wish to remind Rohani that her duty and responsibility as a Minister of Women, Family and Community Development includes defending the rights of women and children.

“Now that she has failed in her duty, we would like to suggest for Rohani to either change her portfolio or resign,” she said in a press statement received here yesterday.

Rohani, who is Batang Lupar MP, recently said Shabudin’s remarks were taken out of context. He was only relaying his own experience of encountering such cases as a former  Syariah Court judge. He was not implying that a nine-year-old girl could get married.

Rohani also said she didn’t know whether Shabudin or anybody else should apologise, adding this was the latter’s speech, and she did not want to interfere.

In the parliamentary recording, Shabudin said it was not a problem for children under 16 -years-old to marry as their body was physically mature enough for marriage. He said a child who had reached puberty, even at nine years old, was considered mature.

“In some instances, it is not impossible that they get married if they have reached puberty at the age of nine. A 12-year-old may have a body of an 18-year-old which means many girls are ‘physically and spiritually’ ready for marriage,” he was quoted as saying.

Shabudin is mulling legal action against the media outlets.

When asked to comment on this, Rohani said it was well within Shabudin’s right to sue the media outlets for their reports, which he claimed spun his remarks out of context.

In response to Rohani’s statement, Voon said Shabudin’s statement was recorded and had gone viral on social media, adding it was also a shame that the statement had even caught the attention of international media.

“It has drawn public outcry and protest because the statement is a degrading statement for women and it is also blatant disrespect and belittlement of women.

“Girls and women should not be judged as objects for sex. Shabudin in his parliamentary speech had clearly propagated the idea that a child who has been raped can be married off to the rapist as a solution to the crime. There is no misunderstanding about that point.”

Voon said rape should be regarded as a crime and the rapists should face legal consequences and punishments as stipulated under the law.

“There cannot be any other solution to absolve the rapist from the sexual crimes and harm that he has inflicted on children and we do not promote child marriages here,” she said.

  1. Should give her the opportunity to experience the real action.
