Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mazlan Mansor should cancel hundreds of parking summonses issued to badminton fans who attended the Malaysian Open at the State Indoor Stadium in Petra Jaya last week, said DAP MP Chong Chieng Jen.
Chong claimed that many were forced to park along the roads to the stadium as there was insufficient parking space.
“I appeal to your good office to exercise your discretion to cancel the summons and not to penalise them,” he said during a press conference today.
“These fans were supporting our national badminton players so I believe it is rather ridiculous or inappropriate to issue them the summons,” the Sarawak DAP chairman added.
He added that events the stature of the Malaysian Open did not often take place in the state, and the police should offer some leeway in the matter.
The Malaysian Open ran from April 4 to 9. Local badminton star Datuk Lee Chong Wei met arch rival Lin Dan in the final, but lost in straight sets to the Chinese shuttler.

Illegal parking is rampant in Kuching. If anything, police need to do more to clamp down the illegal parking. So please don’t cancel the summons.
