Bersih claims 32 voters under one roof in opposition seat

Bukit-Katil,-PAS,-Bukit-BaruElectoral group Bersih 2.0 today claimed there is a case of 32 phantom voters staying in the same house in the Bukit Baru state seat in Malacca.

Outreach officer Chan Tsu Chong told a press conference at Bersih 2.0’s office here, that a corner lot house in Jalan SJ1, Taman Saujana Putra, Bukit Katil was registered as the residential address of 32 voters.

“We discovered the supplementary electoral roll for last quarter of 2016 where it was listed 32 people have the same home address,” he said, adding the Bersih 2.0 team went to the house over the weekend to verify the matter.

“How it is possible for over 30 people stay in a house and we want to know whether they are residence of this parliamentary and state constituency,” he said.

Besides the case of Taman Saujana Putra, Bersih 2.0 also pointed out another case of 41 voters who were transferred to Batu 4 1/2, Kampung Bukit Beruang although none had house numbers in their addresses.

“How can the EC (Election Commission) allow voters without proper house numbers to be registered?”

Chan alleged that the transfer of 73 “voters” to the Bukit Baru state seat was an attempt to have an impact on the voting results in the constituency.

Currently, Dr Khalid Kassim of PAS is the Bukit Baru assemblyman while Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin of PKR is the MP for Bukit Katil, the parliamentary seat.

Khalid won his seat with only a majority of 48 votes in the general election of May 2013 (GE13).

Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah said it was ridiculous that the EC allowed the registration of “phantom voters”.

“We are now having problems on dubious voters in the roll and also genuine voters being objected to.

“Why is the EC acting unprofessionally? Is the EC helping certain quarters achieve their motive?” she asked, referring to reports on how thousands of newly-registered voters in Selangor were objected to by people believed to be Umno members.

Maria told the public that if any discrepancies were detected in the upcoming supplementary electoral roll, they must report the matter to Bersih 2.0 using their hotline number (011-11313803). The electoral roll is expected to be displayed next month.

“We cannot do anything about the Bukit Baru cases because the objection period is over and their names have been gazetted,” she said.

Maria added her team was bracing for more fraud cases as the next general election (GE14) was speculated to be held in a matter of months.

Bersih 2.0 previously alleged that there were efforts by certain irresponsible quarters to prevent some individuals from registering as new voters ahead of GE14. The electoral watchdog also alleged that the Elections (Registration of Electors) Regulations 2002 was being abused.
