State PKR calls on opposition parties to unite to face election

The state Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has called on opposition parties nationwide to unite in order to battle the Barisan Nasional (BN) government.

State PKR chairman Baru Bian said opposition unity is necessary to be perceived as a credible, responsible and viable alternative to BN.

“We must be able to give and take, all the while looking at the bigger picture of change rather than squabble over seats and positions,” said the Ba Kelalan assemblyman at the opening of the PKR Sarawak Convention 2017 yesterday.

Baru admitted it is an uphill battle for the opposition to make inroads in Sarawak, as reflected by the results of the last state election.

According to him, many members suffered from election fatigue and felt disheartened following the results, but he claimed the opposition has actually made a difference in the state.

“We can see that the persistence of the opposition has succeeded in giving Sarawak a stronger voice in Putrajaya. If our main objective is to improve the livelihoods of the people and to stand up for our rights, it does not matter who takes the credit. If Sarawak is given the rightful recognition and share of the resources of this country, everyone benefits,” he said.

Baru also paid tribute to party member Bill Kayong, who was murdered in June last year.

“Bill paid the ultimate price with his life in fighting for the rights of his fellow Sarawakians. He would definitely be with us today (yesterday) had he not been murdered so cruelly.

“We owe it to him and to ourselves to keep on striving to make our dreams into a reality,” he added.

Among those present were Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How, Krian assemblyman Ali Biju, and Miri Member of Parliament Dr Michael Teo.
