S4S lauds See, says CIR Bill a milestone for democracy

Filed under: Politics — Hornbill Unleashed @ 8:01 AM

The Sarawak for Sarawakian (S4S) movement welcomes Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How’s proposal for the Citizens-Initiated Referendum (CIR) Bill 2017, saying the proposition will create another milestone for democracy in Sarawak.

“We have achieved success in bringing up the referendum issue and now it is going to be tabled in the DUN assembly

by the representative after the team has been working hard for it,” S4S spokesman and northern team volunteer Jong Kim Joon said in a press release on Thursday.

Jong added that even if the Bill proposed by See did not meet S4S’ requirements, it would still have their support as the assemblyman had touched on the importance of the concept and framework of referendum during a forum held by S4S recently.

“As of now, See, who represents PKR, is overtaking the self-claimed pro-autonomous party SUPP and DAP. He deserves the highest compliment from S4S due to his work and effort.

“We highly appreciate that there is now a people’s representative who is willing to draft the basic concept and framework for the Referendum Act. Thus, we seek the understanding from the Speaker to practice the spirit of democracy so that members can debate and pass the Bill.”

Jong clarified that although S4S took priority in supporting local-based parties, the people of Sarawak would choose to support parties that give full support on the issue of referendum.

“Today, PKR’s See has made the first move to table a personal Bill. S4S and Sarawakians hope to see a similar move made by SUPP’s Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian and DAP’s Chong Chieng Jen who also signed petition.”

  1. Sarawakians from all corners must give the highly corrupted UMNO Baru controlled BN an ultimatum to increase our petroleum royalty to 20 % and comply with MA 63 before Parliament dissolves and pave the way for GE 14. Failing which we shall take back all BN held Parliament seats and reward Pakatan Harapan with 31 Parliament seats in Sarawak. This is the one and only chance for Sarawak and Sarawakians to ensure the UMNO Baru controlled Putrajaya comply with MA 63 before GE 14.
