Eight-day State Assembly sitting starts today

The first meeting of the second term of the 18th State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today will start with an inspection of the guard of honour comprising 105 officers from the 11th Battalion General Operations Force (GOF) by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

After that, the Head of State will deliver his address for the first sitting of the assembly this year.

This sitting is expected to be a special one for Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg who will be gracing the eight-day sitting in his capacity as Sarawak’s new chief minister

The sitting, which will be presided by DUN Speaker Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar, will see the tabling of the Supplementary Supply (2016) Bill 2017 tomorrow by Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, with the first reading tomorrow followed by the second and third readings on May 16.

Eight motions filed by six elected representatives will also be tabled, touching on issues such as the set-up of the Sarawak Public Transport Consultative Committee for the proposed LRT in the state; results from a unanimously passed motion on May 6, 2014 for the increase of oil and gas royalty from five per cent to 20 per cent; and appointment of community leaders to be made through the recommendation of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as the United Chinese Association, among others.

A total of 411 questions seeking 336 oral replies and 70 written replies will also be presented during the sitting, with the Chief Minister’s Office receiving the highest number of questions at 103 (83 oral and 20 written).
