Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem (left) is pictured with Head of State Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud during the Sarawak State Assembly’s opening ceremony at Bangunan Dewan Undangan Negeri Sarawak Baru June 8, 2016. — Bernama picSarawak Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Openg’s “fine relationship” with federal leaders will smoothen the path for the return of state rights, its Governor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud said today.

“I am confident that the fine relationship will give space for him to continue with the efforts to fight for the rights and interest of Sarawak at the federal level,” Taib, who is the head of the Borneo state, said in his opening speech at the state legislative assembly meeting here.

Abang Johari, 66, took over as chief minister earlier this year after Tan Sri Adenan Satem, 72, died died of heart failure on January 11.

Adenan had been vocal in pressing Putrajaya to return autonomous rights on a number of issues to Sarawak since taking over the office from Taib, who was the previous chief minister, in 2014.

Taib said Abang Johari’s appointment as the sixth chief minister reflects the maturity of the state political leadership which wants political stability to continue.

“His appointment is in line with his wide experience in politics and in the state administration,” he said.

Taib also praised Adenan for his contribution to the state and the people within his short time in office.

“He was one of the leaders who had gained much respect not only by his political allies but also by the Opposition due to his capability, bravery and firmness in fighting for the state’s rights and interests.

“He was outspoken in championing for the welfare of the people regardless of their racial and religious backgrounds which forms the trust of his struggle as the chief minister,” he said.

Taib said although Adenan was the chief minister for over three years, his political leadership had brought much impact on the people of Sarawak.

He said this was proved when he successfully implemented 53 initiatives and actions which had benefitted all levels of society.

“Within that short period, Adenan was a firm leader in fighting for Sarawak’s autonomy and striving to reclaim those powers from the federal government to the state,” he said.

  1. Taib Mahmud sapu all the timber and state / NCR lands for himself. Adenan Satem managed to sapu some state /NCR lands for his wife. Abang Johari has nothing to sapu except to benefit by implementing mega projects .
