Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian denied claims that he was a permanent resident of Australia. — Picture by Sulok TawieLocal Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian denied today claims that he was a permanent resident of Australia.

“I reiterate I have never acquired citizenship in Australia nor sworn allegiance to any country other than Malaysia,” he said when winding the debate in the state legislative assembly.

Dr Sim, who is also Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president, said he was never a permanent resident of Australia when he contested the state elections in 2011 and 2016 and the general elections in 2013.

He said he had to clear his name against the insinuations by Opposition lawmakers during the debate on a motion to disqualify DAP’s Dr Ting Tiong Choon as the Pujut lawmaker for acquiring an Australian citizenship.

The motion, tabled by international trade and e-commerce minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, was supported by 70 state Barisan Nasional (BN) lawmakers and opposed by 10 from the Opposition.

In the heat of the debate, Dr Ting was reported to have told Wong to ask Dr Sim, who was working in Australia for 18 years, whether he was an Australian citizen.

Dr Sim said May 12 was a sad day for the House and for Sarawak when Dr Ting was disqualified as state lawmaker for Pujut.

Dr Ting was alleged to have Australian citizenship in 2010, but renounced it in April last year, just before the May state elections.

The Election Commission will meet tomorrow to fix the date of a by-election in Pujut to fill the vacancy created by the disqualification of Dr Ting as its elected representative.

  1. In this case maybe the Government must ensure that all those with foreign PR status should not be allowed to work in Malaysia or set up business here too. Why allow these people to make money here and bring the profit away .

  2. Dr Sim should be honest enough to admit he was a PR in Australia but had given up before he contested in the state election. When he actually gave up his Australian PR can be verified.
