Azmin explains why jailed Anwar is still PKR’s choice for PM

PKR has been facing flak, including its allies, for insisting on Anwar being prime minister if the federal Pakatan Harapan Opposition pact takes Putrajaya in the next general elections. — Picture by KE OoiPKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is still the party’s prime minister-designate despite his incarceration because he represents the country’s aspiration, Datuk Seri Azmin Ali said tonight.

“Anwar is the symbol of oppression. Anwar’s freedom is the people’s freedom. That has been our position,” the PKR deputy president told reporters after his party’s political bureau met at its headquarters here.

PKR has been facing flak, including its allies, for insisting on Anwar being prime minister if the federal Pakatan Harapan Opposition pact takes Putrajaya in the next general elections due by mid next year.

At its recent congress over the weekend, the party’s vice-president Rafizi Ramli explained how to realise its plan, saying its party president and Anwar’s wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, would be interim PM and work towards Anwar being pardoned and released from prison.

Then a by-election would be held for Anwar to be PM a month or two after Dr Wan Azizah takes the post.
