Voon sees no reason to suspend state’s negotiation on oil royalty

Image result for voon shiak niThere is no ground for Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg to suspend negotiations on the demand for 20 per cent oil royalty from Petronas, said PKR Women national vice-president Voon Shiak Ni.

According to her, this is because the national oil and gas company is still reaping profits from oil fields in Sarawak.

“The public is not convinced by the need for the Chief Minister to suspend talks on the demand for our oil royalty.

“It was just a month ago he assured Sarawakians that he will continue to pursue the demand for the increase in oil royalty.

“He also assured that he will provide the people with a report on the long drawn-out oil and gas royalty negotiations with Petronas within the next three months. Sarawakians are very disappointed,” she said in a statement recently.

Voon was commenting on Abang Johari’s recent winding-up speech at the 18th State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting where he had stated that he would have to take cognisance of the fact that the state government was negotiating in an unfavourable environment when oil price is low and production cost high.

He pointed out that under such circumstances, the request of a 20 per cent oil royalty, though still on the state government’s agenda, had to be managed with care.

“We urge Datuk Amar Abang Johari to be more bold and firm in defending the rights of Sarawakians in his role as the Chief Minister of Sarawak.

“We would also like to remind him that Sarawak’s development after more than 50 years of independence is still ten years behind when compared to development in Peninsular Malaysia,” she expressed.
