‘Stomp on Sivarasa’ campaign fails to rile MP

Filed under: Politics — Hornbill Unleashed @ 8:01 AM

sivarasa-perkasa-1Subang MP R Sivarasa is unshaken by Perkasa Youth’s protest outside his Kota Damansara office here today.

Saying that it is within the Malay pressure group’s rights to hold the protest, Sivarasa chose not to take any legal action against them.

“Perkasa Youth has a right to peacefully assemble and protest,” he told FMT.

“At the same time, I believe Malaysian voters are sufficiently aware and mature to be able to assess their behaviour in front of my office.”

The protest was led by Perkasa Youth chief Azrul Akmal Saharudin this afternoon as part of the youth group’s “Menapak Sivarasa Secukup Rasa” (“Stomp on Sivarasa to your heart’s content”) campaign.

During the protest, they held up Perkasa’s yellow flag and stomped on a caricature of Sivarasa.

They claimed he had been “rude” towards Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah by “disobeying the sultan’s edict which prevented any unlicensed individuals from speaking at a mosque or its compound”.

This was in relation to allegations that Sivarasa had given a political speech inside Masjid An-Nur, Kampung Melayu Subang, on May 24.

Sivarasa, however, had denied these allegations, saying he was at the mosque to provide contributions and had briefly conveyed his Ramadan greetings when invited to speak.

Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) director Haris Kassim had said that a special four-man committee will summon the mosque’s committee members tomorrow, to facilitate investigations into the incident.

He also said that Sivarasa would be called in “if necessary”.

To this, Sivarasa said he had no problem cooperating with Jais.

This is because he is “quite clear” on the fact that he did not give a political speech in the mosque.

“I certainly did not ‘use’ the mosque for my political purposes as alleged by certain quarters,” he said.

On Friday, Sultan Sharafuddin expressed unhappiness at the action of Sivarasa and ordered Jais to investigate the matter in detail.
