Organisers say Jerusalem’s Jubilee event not political

The Dome of the Rock is seen during sunset on the compound known to Muslims as al-Haram al-Sharif and to Jews as Temple Mount in Jerusalem’s Old City, May 17, 2017. — Reuters picOrganisers of the Jerusalem’s Jubilee event denied today allegations that it was promoting Zionism and said it was just a prayer gathering for Christians.

News portal The Malaysian Insight reported the organisers of the All Malaysian-Golden Gate Revival Convocation (AMGGRC) as saying in a statement that the event scheduled this month at a church in Melaka was a gathering for churches in Malaysia and the Asia-Pacific to pray for Malaysia and the region, as well as to understand the spiritual connotation and meaning of Jerusalem in the Christian bible.

“AMGGRC has no intention to provoke and challenge the sensitivities of Malays and Muslims in Malaysia,” the organisers were quoted saying.

“It definitely does not carry any political connotations, implications or whatsoever meaning related to it now or in the future. It is deeply regretted that what was started with a good intention to pray for the peace and prosperity of Malaysia has caused much confusion and misunderstanding among certain groups,” they added.

PAS and several conservative Muslim groups had condemned the event, with a PAS Youth leader claiming that the AMGGRC was a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Six-Day War, in which Israel defeated its Arab neighbours — Jordan, Egypt and Syria — and annexed East Jerusalem and most of the West Bank. The Six-Day War marked a new phase in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, cementing Israel’s position as a regional power and creating hundreds of thousands of refugees.

National newswire Bernama reported that the organisers have decided to cancel the gathering after police advised them to do so.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi banned the event, reportedly saying that Muslims were offended.
