Reopen 1MDB files to verify our reports, says Sarawak Report

Clare-Rewcastle-BrownSarawak Report says if Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar is interested in verifying the information in its reports, all he has to do is reopen the task force files on 1MDB.

Responding to Khalid’s call for its editor, Clare Rewcastle-Brown, to come to Malaysia and prove the allegations she had made through the site, it said the IGP need only persuade Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali to “fulfil his constitutional duty” and reopen the files.

“There before him he will see all the material that we have been quoting from, which is why anyone who knows anything about the case has been hiding under a stone ever since the material started coming out,” it said in a statement on its website today.

It added that Khalid’s refusal to provide safe passage for Rewcastle-Brown to come to Malaysia meant she would have to decline “his doubtless well-intentioned and gracious offer”.

Earlier today, Khalid said he would not guarantee Rewcastle-Brown safe passage if she came to Malaysia, adding that she had tarnished the reputation of the police force.

He also said most of the reports by Sarawak Report were hearsay and “baseless”.

This followed a recent article in which the whistleblower site claimed RM9.5 million was transferred to lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah’s bank account from Prime Minister Najib Razak’s personal account.

According to the report, the transfer had been made in two payments, in September 2013 and February 2014.

Rewcastle-Brown has reportedly said Malaysian police are free to see her in the UK if they wish to speak to her.
