The coalition earlier cancelled its supreme council meeting this afternoon, when it had been expected to name its choice to contest the July 4 poll.

“Yes, I have received a message to postpone the meeting,” Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) secretary general Datuk Sebastian Ting said when asked to confirm the postponement.

The Election Commission previously fixed June 20 as nomination day for the by-election triggered by the Sarawak assembly’s decision to strip Ting of his seat for previously acquiring an Australian citizenship.

The Election Commission has fixed June 20 as nomination day for the by-election triggered by the Sarawak assembly’s decision to strip Dr Ting of his seat for previously acquiring an Australian citizenship.

Ambrose Cheng, the press secretary to Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Openg, said the meeting will be held at another day.

“Wait for the court’s decision,” he said when asked why today’s supreme council meeting was cancelled.

High Court judge Datuk Douglas Primus Sikayun, who is currently hearing the arguments from lawyers representing Dr Ting and the five respondents, is scheduled to deliver his ruling on June 19.

In his lawsuit, Dr Ting named Sarawak Speaker Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, International Trade and E-Commerce Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, the Sarawak assembly, the state government and Election Commission as the respondents.

Among others, he wanted the court to declare that he is still the Pujut assemblyman and that his disqualification by the state assembly on May 12 was null and void.

  1. Now that the Kuching High Court had ruled that Dr Ting ‘s disqualification by the DUN speaker was illegal and unconstitutional, Wong Soon Koh ‘s personal lawyer and secretary general of UPP must apologise to the voters of Pujut. The arrogance and wicked agenda of UPP secretary general, George Lo, has led the stupid and useless DUN speaker to disqualify Dr Ting of DAP which had angered Pujut voters.
