DAP dares Rahman to report ‘complainant’ behind DoJ suit

lim-lip-eng-rahman-dahlan-doj-1Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng has challenged the government to file the necessary reports following allegations made by a minister that the complainant behind the United States Department of Justice’s (DoJ) civil suit has a hidden agenda.

Lim urged Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Rahman Dahlan to prove that the DoJ was working with a Malaysian complainant, with an agenda to topple the government.

“Rahman believes that the complainant of the civil suit is Malaysian and that the DoJ is working with that individual.

“So, I give them 24 hours to lodge the necessary report to prove their allegations,” Lim said at a press conference today, adding that Rahman’s allegation was serious and required the DoJ to disclose the information of the complainant.

Lim also mocked Rahman for not knowing the basic details about the civil suit by the DoJ.

“It is clear cut that the complainant is the DoJ and no one else. But since Rahman doesn’t understand, I urge the DoJ to name the complainant,” Lim said after he and four PPBM members filed a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today against individuals mentioned in the DoJ civil suit and others linked to the 1MDB scandal.

On June 18, Rahman called for the DoJ to name the complainants in its civil suit that sought to seize assets purchased using funds allegedly embezzled from 1MDB.

Rahman claimed that the DoJ’s suit was “clearly” triggered by complaints by individuals with a “heinous political agenda” against Prime Minister Najib Razak and his administration.

In its latest court filings in California, the DoJ is seeking to seize US$540 million (RM2.3 billion) in assets including art works, jewellery, a yacht worth US$165 million, and film rights purchased with funds allegedly embezzled from 1MDB.

The assets named in the applications included the film rights to two comedies, “Dumb and Dumber To” starring Jim Carrey and “Daddy’s Home” with Will Ferrell.

The DoJ suit also said Malaysian businessman Low Taek Jho (Jho Low) had purchased a 22-carat pink diamond necklace worth US$27.3 million for the “wife of Malaysian Official No. 1” (MO1), using the same source of funds.

This action follows the first civil suit filed by the DoJ last July which sought to recover all the assets including but not limited to the Park Lane hotel in New York, a luxury hotel in Beverly Hills, condominiums in New York, a private jet, expensive works of art, as well as the financing of Martin Scorsese’s movie “The Wolf of Wall Street”, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio.

With the recent court filings, the total value of the assets sought by the DoJ increases to US$1.8 billion (RM7.7 billion).
