Sarawak Speaker Datuk Amar Asfia Awang Nassar says the DAP cannot dictate terms to the Barisan Nasional, June 25, 2017. — Picture by Sulok TawieThe Sarawak assembly will not convene an emergency meeting as demanded by state DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen, Speaker Datuk Amar Asfia Awang Nassar said today.

He insisted the state was not facing a constitutional crisis following a High Court ruling that restored DAP’s Dr Ting Tiong Choon’s post as Pujut state assemblyman.

“The emergency meeting will not happen,” he said when met by reporters at Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Openg’s Hari Raya open house at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here.

He said the DAP, with just seven seats, cannot dictate terms to Barisan Nasional that has 72 seats in the state assembly.

Asfia added it would be sub judice for the state assembly to discuss the court’s ruling since he has filed a notice of appeal.

In his letter, Chong, who is the Kota Sentosa assemblyman, claimed a constitutional crisis had arose after Asfia named the state assembly as one of the respondents in his appeal to the Court of Appeal.

Asfia also named named Dr Ting, International Trade and E-Commerce Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh and the Election Commission as the respondents.

In Dr Ting’s lawsuit challenging his sacking by the state assembly on May 12, he named Asfia as the first respondent, Wong as the second respondent, state assembly as the third respondent, state government as fourth respondent and Election Commission as fifth respondent.

However, the court removed the state government from the list.

Dr Ting had been stripped of the Pujut seat after the state assembly approved a motion tabled by Wong.
