Monica Mazlan, 6, and her brother, Jackson, 4, both from Kampung Paon, Sungai Rimu, died at the Sarawak General Hospital yesterday. — Google screenshotThe two children who died from rabies here yesterday might still be alive if their families had received welfare aid from the state government, according to PKR Wanita vice head Voon Shiak Ni.

Voon claimed the family would then have been able to bring the two siblings to get medical treatment at the Serian district hospital after they had been bitten by infected dogs at the end of April.

“It is a grave regret that two young lives are gone because of poverty,” she said, referring to a Borneo Post report that family could not come up with RM40 for the trip to the hospital.

Voon further said the Barisan Nasional assemblyman for the area could have assisted the family to apply for the welfare assistance.

She added that the incident should bring attention to families who denied welfare assistance because of the lack of information.

They were diagnosed as brain dead and their parents agreed to terminate their life support.

A third case, a seven-year-old girl from Kampung Lebor, is still ventilated and categorised as critically ill at the Sarawak General Hospital.

  1. All the Dayak YBs and community leaders are traitors to their own community. They only cared about their own rice bowls and ensuring their children obtained overseas degree.
