Its chief Abdul Raafidin Majidi said the wing does not have any problem in supporting the action if it benefits the state and makes Sarawakians realise their rights as one of the important components in the formation of the federation of Malaysia.

“We must continue to fight for the rights, including the oil royalty issue, because a large portion of the oil and gas fields in the country is situated in Sarawak’s waters,” he said in a press statement recently.

The state legal team, headed by Assistant Minister of Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, will consist of State Legal Counsel Datuk JC Fong, State Legislative Assembly (DUN) deputy speaker Datuk Gerawat Gala and lawyers from the State Attorney General’s Chambers.

The legal team will be in London on July 16 to conducted the study for between four and five days.

Abdul Raafidin said although there were certain quarters who saw the action as a waste of the taxpayers’ money, PKR Sarawak Youth was of the opinion that the coming trip would be justified if it could unearth information that was not known and obtained by all parties as well as help to return the full rights of the people of Sarawak.

“However, the PKR Sarawak youth wing would also like to propose to the Chief Minister to appoint a team of lawyers and law practitioners with calibre and knowledge in this issue, including lawyers from the Sarawak opposition to join the legal team.

“PKR Sarawak youth wing is confident that PKR and other Pakatan Harapan component parties have many lawyers with calibre that can help the legal team to obtain information during the visit to London.

“PKR Sarawak youth wing also view this issue from the perspective that it benefits the people of Sarawak and we believe that the principles of Sarawak rights must be prioritised above anything else.

“This also indrectly will given a signal to the Barisan Nasional federal government that in the issue of fighting for Sarawak’s rights, Sarawakians are united although they are different in terms of political party and principles.”

However, Abdul Raafidin reminded the legal team and law practitioners who will be joining the London trip to spend the taxpayers’ money prudently in fighting for Sarawak rights and not as a ‘drama’ or holiday sponsored by the people.

“At the same time, PKR Sarawak youth wing is also consistent in calling on the Chief Minister of Sarawak to continue to be sincere on the autonomy issue and urge Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to return Sarawak’s rights.”
