“If that is the people’s choice, why not?” Dr Mahathir said during a press conference here.

He also said that he stood by his previous assessment that Anwar was unfit to be prime minister, but said that his opinion only applied to the “prevailing circumstances of that time”.

“I might change my mind again next year,” he quipped.

British publication The Guardian recently reported Dr Mahathir as supporting Anwar to become the next prime minister, but the former denied backing Anwar to the local media.

Dr Mahathir was recently appointed the chairman of the federal opposition coalition, Pakatan Harapan.

Anwar serves as the de facto leader and the coalition has not formally decided on who will be their candidate for the top post of prime minister should they win the elections.

“That is an option we are keeping to ourselves, so there is an element of surprise. It can be announced next week, before elections, or right after elections,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Mahathir said the Opposition pact will submit their coalition logo to the Registrar of Societies this week to register itself as a formal coalition that would contest under an unified logo.
