“Failure of the MACC and police to investigate and take appropriate legal action on the Scorpene submarine scandal will cause the image and integrity of the agencies to be sullied, and cause people to lose faith (in those agencies),” PKR Youth deputy chief Afif Bahardin said in a statement today.

It was reported today that French investigators had indicted two former top executives with corruption over alleged kickbacks from the sale of two Scorpene-class submarines to Malaysia.

This followed an investigation launched in 2010, after a complaint was filed by Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) in France in November 2009.

The investigation was to determine if a former president of French defence group, Thales International Asia, had paid kickbacks to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak via his former close associate, Abdul Razak Baginda, for a contract to supply two Scorpene submarines to Malaysia.

Najib was defence minister at the time.

Afif said the French indictment proved that there were criminal elements in the case, which he said involved corruption, as well as the death of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu.

Altantuya had allegedly worked as a translator for Razak Baginda during negotiations on the submarines.

Razak Baginda, who admitted to having an affair with Altantuya, was charged with abetting the murder but was later acquitted without his defence being called.

The police, meanwhile, have cleared Najib of any wrongdoing. He was also reported to have sworn his innocence in the name of God.

Former police commandos Sirul Azhar Umar and Azilah Hadri were convicted of Altantuya’s murder, and sentenced to death.

Sirul, however, fled to Australia, where he was subsequently detained. The Malaysian government is currently trying to extradite him.

No motive was ever established for the murder.

  1. The useless, hopeless and corrupted MACC and IGP will not probe any criminal acts and corruption involving any cronies of Najib and Rosmah. Now that the corrupted Appeal Court judges presiding over cases involving the EC had cleared the EC of wrongdoing, Najib will most likely dissolved Parliament after presenting the budget in October .
