PAC won’t reopen probe on 1MDB, says chairman

hassan-ariffn-1mdbThe parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will not reopen investigations into the scandal-hit 1MDB, says chairman Hasan Arifin.

He said the report of the PAC’s investigation had already been presented to the Dewan Rakyat and any further action was for the government to decide.

“The PAC will not reopen the investigation,” he told a news conference in Parliament today.

Hasan gave this response when questioned by reporters about the latest civil suit filed by the United States Department of Justice (DoJ) seeking to forfeit assets bought with allegedly stolen 1MDB funds.

The US$540 million (RM2.31 billion) assets targeted by the DoJ in the lawsuit included artworks and property rights to two Hollywood films.

Hasan said the investigation by the PAC on 1MDB was different and had no connection with the DoJ lawsuit.

The 106-page PAC report tabled in Parliament cleared Prime Minister Najib Razak of any wrongdoing relating to the 1MDB issue as he was found not involved directly in the state-owned investment company.

Instead, the report recommended that the relevant authorities investigate the former CEO of 1MDB, Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi, and others.
