Suhakam to hold public inquiry over missing pastors, activists

Susanna Liew Sow Yoke, wife of abducted Pastor Raymond Koh at the solidarity vigil by civil societies over four abduction victims over the last four months in Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur, April 8, 2017. ― Picture by Saw Siow FengThe Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) will hold public hearings on the disappearances of Pastor Raymond Koh, social activist Amri Che Mat, Pastor Joshua Hilmi and his wife Ruth Hilmi.The inquiry will seek to determine whether the missing people are victims of “enforced disappearances” or “involuntary disappearances in breach or breaches of the criminal and/or civil law and/or applicable human rights laws”.

The inquiry will be chaired by Datuk Mah Weng Kwai as chairman and assisted by Prof Datuk Aishah Bidin and Dr. Nik Salida Suhaila Nik Saleh.

The panel will also seek to learn how such breaches occurred and the parties responsible.

It will also evaluate whether the Royal Malaysia Police took adequate steps to investigate the alleged breaches, and recommend measures or guidelines to ensure it will not happen again.

To date, the commission have recorded 35 statements from witnesses for all cases and the inquiry is seeking answers to the disappearances.

The hearings will be held at Suhakam’s office on October 19, 20 and 30, and November 2,3,13,14,15,15 & 17.
