PH chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad admitted that announcing such a candidate after the elections would be too late and may impact the pact negatively.

“To announce it after the elections would be too late [and have negative impact] so it must be before that,” Dr Mahathir told reporters, refusing to comment further.

Malay Mail first reported last month that PH parties are finalising a proposal to announce its candidate for prime minister at its convention on January 7.

The PH leadership was previously divided over the matter, as some feel the announcement should be kept until Parliament is dissolved, while others believe that the convention would be the most suitable platform to do so.

An estimated 1,200 representatives are expected to attend the convention at the Ideal Convention Centre in Shah Alam, Dr Mahathir said following PH’s presidential council meeting at Menara Yayasan Selangor here.

“The convention will also discuss the various election policies which the component parties have formulated.

“You will find out on the day itself, but it will feature slots on the people and PH leadership as well, in addition to the policies,” he said.

Also present was PH chief secretary Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, PPBM Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, PKR vice-president Dr Xavier Jayakumar, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, DAP vice-president Teresa Kok, and DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke.

The Opposition coalition recently proposed PPBM chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister, and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s wife and PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as his deputy, should it win the next general election.
